Yes, we need to look after ourselves, but the fact is, no amount of self care will solve the systemic issues that are pervasive in healthcare right now.

For some time now, being a health professional has been a tough gig.

All too often, however, we are told that the answer is an individual one, with workplaces recommending counselling through initiatives such as Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), and always, to do more ‘self care’.

Whilst it is important for us to look after ourselves, a focus on EAP and self care misses the point, and worse, as it locates the problem in individual workers, when these are political, cultural and systemic issues.

In reality we need a multi-pronged solution across all levels: political, organisational, within services and teams, as well as individually.

A social justice and neuroscience perspective for health professionals.

Hello and welcome!

I’m Minky van der Walt.

I spend my days helping healthcare workers just like you reconnect to themselves, so that they can have a sustainable career and thrive with their family, friends & all the other important things in life.

After years of doing this, I started to notice a pretty consistent trend.

Health professionals focus so much of their energy on everyone else, at work, at home, with friends, but really struggle to look after themselves.

As if this isn’t bad enough, they also give themselves a hard time about this, thinking they’re not good enough or a failure, because, as health professionals, they should know better... shouldn't they?

Health professionals are experts at writing a page-long list of self care tips. But when it comes to themselves? They either, aren’t able to take action, don’t think they need to, or struggle to make space or time for themselves.

The result?

  • zoning out to Netflix
  • another glass of wine
  • late night doom scrolling

With far too many clinicians are leaving their professions as waiting lists for services grow.

So, I decided to take my 25 years of clinical experience in chronic stress and traumatic mental health, blend it with my nerdy passion for neuroscience, therapeutic arts, music and somatics to create Tempo: Reconnect – a program that I’ve developed to help clinicians to build a community of support, reconnect to what they need, apply the practical steps to supporting themselves and actually have energy for the fun things in life again.
